$75 · Antique Native Bird’s Head Effigy Ladle
Antique Native Bird's Head Effigy Ladle from the late 1800's. This ladle (or butter paddle) was most likely native carved as it was purchased from a collector who lived near Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory in South Eastern Ontario. First Nations carvers traditionally created a hooked end to their ladles, which in profile resembled a bird's head.
The ladle measures 12 inches (30.5 cm) long and 4 inches (10.5 cm) wide. The edges of the ladle are somewhat rough but that is understandable, given its age. It has a lovely, dark honey patina.
