$85 · Antique Native “Potato Stamp” Basket
Antique Native "Potato Stamp" Basket from the Eastern Great Lakes area — most likely Mohawk. The decoration of this rectangular basket is known as "potato stamp" because a potato, or another easily carved object, would have been carved with the design and then dipped in a natural dye to make the repeated motifs. The ash splint basket is open at the top, with a double bentwood rim and single lashing to hold both sides of the rim together. It has been woven with both wide and narrow splints.
It measures 13 inches (33 cm) long, 8½ inches (22 cm) wide, and 4½ inches (11.5 cm) tall. Judging from its patina, the basket was probably made in the early twentieth century.
It is in good used condition, although some of the lashing around the rim has been broken (see photo).
