$125 · Antique Spill Vase

Antique Spill Vase. This elegant vase from Staffordshire, England features two royal children sleeping with a bird (possibly a dove?) watching over them. It is hand-painted and features a great deal of detailing. There are several tufts of hand-molded foliage at the end of the branches and the dove is holding a small morsel of greenery in his beak. The figures are glazed in cobalt blue and pink with flushed cheeks. Circa mid-19th century. It is in excellent condition with no chips or cracks. There is a thin band of gilt around the front of the base which is slightly worn (see photos).

Spill vases were common in Victorian England. "They were often used as ornamental pieces, to be placed on the mantlepiece. Matches were expensive at the time: instead, pieces of newspaper were rolled into thin spills, and then a light obtained from the fire to light the master's pipe, a candle, or perhaps a gas mantle in wealthier homes". (Source: Staffordshire Figures of the 19th & 20th Century, A Collector's Guide, by Kit Harding, published by Miller's in 2000).

Length at the base: 4 1/4"
Height from the base:5 1/4"
