This framed Currier & Ives coloured lithograph, "The First Step," was produced between 1857-1907. The famed New York based printers produced a number of hand-coloured lithographs celebrating American life. Images include domestic scenes (like the one featured here of a mother witnessing her child's first step), farm, fishing, hunting, city life, and rural scenes. They were known in their day as "publishers of cheap and popular prints". Today their images are popular among collectors for depicting a bygone era of early American life that is both idyllic and romantic.
Length: 15 1/2″ (39 cm)
Width: 11 1/2″ (29 cm)
The lithograph has a number of faint yellow spots, mostly visible on the white portion of the image. The colour on the image remains vivid.
