$95 · Pair of Butter Moulds and Stamps
Pair of Butter Moulds & Stamps: This beautifully carved pair of antique butter moulds and stamps is from Quebec and dates to the 19th Century. They feature a floral motif of Scotch thistle carved in hardwood, a common decoration in French Quebec at the time. Sold as a pair.
Butter used to be shaped with moulds, usually round in shape and fitted with a removable stamp. The set you see here has been well used but the stamp is still in excellent condition, is darker in colour, and remains intact with no chips, dents or scratches. The outside mould shows some wear commensurate with its age. The smaller mould and press was purely for decorative use and was likely seldom, if ever, used.
Large mould: Height: 5″, 12 1/2″ circumference around the mold
Large press: 10″ circumference around the press
Small mould: Height: 2 1/4″
Small press: 3 1/4″ circumference around the press
