$50 · Pair of Majolica Cameo Plates. Circa 1860 – 1880.
Pair of majolica cameo (or portrait medallion) plates. Circa 1860 - 1880. The central medallion consists of a deep turquoise image of a renaissance boy. The "portrait" is surrounded by a crisply molded and scalloped edging in a dusty rose colour. The back of each plate has the impressed numbers 682 over 7, which is consistent with the numbering system once used by Villeroy and Boch (Germany). Because majolica was fired at a relatively low temperature, there are some tiny "flea bites" in the rose surround of both plates which my camera is unable to capture. Nevertheless, the plates are in great condition, with no cracks or crazing. They measure 7 ¾ inches in diameter. Sold as a pair.
