$90 · Pair of antique flow blue “Chain of States” plates
Pair of antique flow blue "Chain of States" plates. Circa 1900. The Chain of States pattern is also known as the "Martha Washington" pattern. This pair of plates was made by an unknown Staffordshire (England) potter for the Cushman Furniture Company (Attleboro, Massachusets), most likely as a promotional giveaway. The pattern is modeled after the original polychrome china given to Martha Washington in 1796. In the centre are the initials M.W. and the Latin motto "Decus et Tutamen ab Illo" (Glory and the Defence of it). Around the scalloped border is a chain of the names of fifteen early states. Sold as a pair.
The plates are 9 inches (23 cm) in diameter.
Given their age, the plates are in good to excellent condition: one plate has a minor chip on the underside (see photo) but otherwise there are no issues.
