$40 · Victorian Jet Brooch
Victorian jet brooch. This dainty mourning brooch is made out of carved jet in a design composed of a row of four flowers, bracketed by a leaf at each end, with "Art Nouveau-ish" scrolls encompassing the whole. It is 1¾ inches wide (4½ cm) by 7/8 inch (1 cm) deep. [Queen Victoria established the fashion of wearing jet jewellery during a mourning period.] The wider-style tube hinge indicates that the brooch dates from the last quarter of the nineteenth century. The C-clasp and pin are sturdy and function well.
