Vintage Avon Jewellery Set. This vintage Avon "Precious Pretender" necklace, bracelet and matching earrings (1971) are still in the original boxes. Avon began producing costume jewellery in 1963; however, the jewellery was not for purchase but rather was first marketed as gifts with purchase. In 1970, costume jewellery became its own section in the catalogue and pieces could be bought separately. "Precious Pretenders" is the second of the design collections available for separate purchase. The gold tone pieces combine delicate heart shaped filigree with diamond shaped accents. It is extremely unusual to find all three pieces still in their presentation boxes. In fact, the set shows no sign of wear.
The necklace is 16 inches (40 cm) long, ½ inch (1¼ cm) wide, with a 3½ inch (9 cm) extender that ends in a polished gold tone bead, and is fastened by a J-hook. The bracelet is 7 inches (17½ cm) long and 3/8 inch (1 cm) wide with a fold over clasp. The clip earrings are 7/8 inch (2¼ cm) in diameter.
