$20 · Vintage Bottle Stoppers
Vintage Bottle Stoppers. Both of them are mechanical and hand carved in wood. One of them is marked and numbered but it is difficult to decifer. Both bear the distinctive marks of Anri pieces. Sold individually.
Sailor (mechanical). The string on the backside moves the man's hat up and down. The arm holding the sailor's hat has been repaired but the mechanical mechanism still functions. Marked and numbered but difficult to read.
A man smiling with a jacket, tie and hat (mechanical). The wooden lever at the back moves the man's head up and down. Sometimes his mouth opens at the same time. Both the figure and the cork stopper are in excellent condition.
The design and quality bear the distinctive marks of hand carved and painted Anri pieces, known for their unique, naif qualities. Both stoppers are approximately 4″ in length with varying circumferences of between 4″-6″.
The Italian Anri company made wooden bottle stoppers from 1912 until the mid 1960's. The earliest were hand carved and painted by people who lived in the the Groeden mountain area of Northern Italy. The earlier stoppers only had paper labels and were not designed to last. Each piece was handmade and unique. All were constructed out of the best slow grain and symmetrical grown wood such as maple, lime, alpine pine, ash and pear trees. (Source: www.anricarvings.com)
