Maurice " Rocket " Richard was a Canadian ice hockey player who played 18 seasons in the NHL for the Montreal Canadians. Richard was the 1st player in NHL history to score 50 goals in 1 season, doing this in 50 games (1944/45), and the 1st to reach 500 career goals. He retired in 1960 as the league's all - time leader in goals , 544. In 1947, he won the Hart Trophy as the NHL's most valuable player. He was inducted in the Hall of Fame in 1961 and the Canada's Sports Hall of Fame in 1975. The Canadians retired his number 9 in 1960.
